Aborted my run after half a mile

I felt fine before I started running. My wakeup heart rate was 58. The temperature was in the low 70s (F) when I left home. As soon as I started running, however, I could tell this was not a running day. My energy level went down, and I had a hard time continuing to run. I knew that I had to mow my lawns when later this morning and needed to conserve energy, so I aborted the run and mostly walked back to my car.

  2. It's our bodies, I'm convinced. The body knows more than we know and when it isn't time, it isn't time.

  5. You're right, Joe, Caron, and Jim. It is normal to have peaks and slumps in our running. Many new runners don't understand this and get frustrated when they go into a slump. Slumps are one of the ways our bodies tell us they can't handle the stress we're giving them. The key to getting out of a slump is extra rest.

Thanks, Colton, for your nice comment and for the link to your blog!

  7. You'll appreciate this, Allen. Yesterday, my doctor told me that 1) Normally, he would recommend that I hold off on running for 6 weeks with the hip pain I had, but that 2) He understood how much I miss running, and thought it would be OK if I start again, only for short distances.
So this morning, Ernie (Golden Retriever) and I did about a 1/4 mile in a run-walk mode, just as you described. No pain. Can't wait until tomorrow...
