What do you do when you're tired? abort the run!

I started to run, but at the half-mile mark I could tell I was much more tired than I was yesterday, and I aborted the run and came home. Apparently my run yesterday put a lot more stress on my body than I realized. My wakeup HR was 51.

The temperature was in the high 80s and a 5-10 mph wind was blowing, a precursor to a storm front that will be arriving tonight and tomorrow. We need the water from the storm.

  1. Hi, fellow Runner: I am getting back to nearly daily runs, but am finding after a 5-minute warmup, I tend to get out of breath after only a quarter mile. So I walk for 50 yards, then resume a 100-yard run and continue on with these intervals. Do you know who I can see, what type physician, to find out if I have asthma, etc.? You experience anything like this? Jim Mason of just north of Richmond, Va.

  2. Hi Jim,

Concerning doctors, I would suggest that you start with your personal/family doctor.

A common cause of getting out of breath is that you're going too fast and/or too far with your running. Do you get out of breath if you just walk? If not, do mostly walking and mix in a little running such that you don't get out of breath. Slowly increase the amount of running, using being out of breath as an indication that you've done too much running and need to add running in smaller increments.

I used to live in Maryland, near the DC, and I've visited Virginia a number of times. Beautiful country back there!
