The running & walking experiences of an 86 year old man. I used to run and walk alone, but now I walk with my wife, although I sometimes go walking alone. My overall goal is to reach age 100 and still be walking for my long and medium walks. I enjoy my walks, especially those with my wife, although I miss going long distance.

Well, at least you found that out BEFORE the fun run, not during! :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, BB, it would have been funny if I started the run thinking it was a 5K. I would run and run thinking I'm almost there but wondering why the Jordan River Temple was still in the distance.
ReplyDeleteIn earlier times, runners went from one church to another church, hence the name steeplechase. South Jordan is the only city in the world with two Mormon temples, and the fun run will go from the Oquirrh Mountain Temple to the Jordan River Temple. Proceeds from the run will go to Christmas Box International.
I should be ready for the run next year.
No kidding! Well how funny - I've heard the term "steeplechase" my whole life, but had no idea how the term came about. I notice the starting temple has the word "mountain" in it, and the temple where the race ends has the word "river" in it. Is it a downhill run? Five miles downhill might make for a nice run! Well, not nice on the knees, but nice for the lungs...
ReplyDeleteBB,
ReplyDeleteThe Salt Lake valley is in a bowl that is formed by the Wasatch Mountains on the east and the Oquirrh Mountains on the west and the Jordan River at the low point. The Oquirrh Mountain Temple is higher than the Jordan River Temple, but the difference in elevation is only about 800 feet or so, and that amount spread over 5 miles means the downhill run won't be a knee-challenge for most runners.
Steeplechase races usually have obstacles, and the obstacles for the fun run will be a busy highway, several canals, and lights at intersections. There is a bridge over the highway, and that bridge will act as a small hill. The bridges over the canals are level and won't be a problem. The biggest obstacles will be the traffic lights. But, since this is a fun run and not a race, people can catch their breath while they wait for the lights to change.
Good for you! It's better not to try to take on too much before your ready. I don't know what I'd do if I got into a race like that and discovered it was longer than I'd expected.
ReplyDeleteI have to chuckle, Matt, when I think about this. In January, before my blood clot attack, 5 miles was my rest runs. My regular runs were 7-10 miles. Now, I can't do 5 miles. But, I'm getting there...
ReplyDeleteInteresting.
