Can't eat anything before I run

I usually run first thing in the morning before I have breakfast. In the past I've been able to eat something light before I left for the run, but I'm finding now that I'm running faster for my LSD and rest paces, I can't eat anything. This morning I had a couple handfuls of Cheerios, and I had an upset stomach for the first mile or so.

  1. I usually eat Cheerios with bananas before I run...takes about 90 minutes for me to check the computer for messages, get dressed, and then travel to my gym, prep and then run. Luckily I don't suffer from the breakfast! Maybe change your breakfast to toast and jam?

  2. Hi Bruce,

About a year ago I experimented with various things to eat immediately before I went running. Then, I could eat a handful of dry Cheerios, a slice of wheat bread, a banana (not all of these just one at a time).

I'm running 1 1/2 to 2 minutes faster now, and my stomach seems more sensitive to any food I've eaten. I usually run on an empty stomach, and that works for me as long as I had reasonable food the evening before.
